Artist Statement

CORRESPONDANCE explores my developing relationship with Montréal through field recordings, transit, and sound. Built from recordings captured across the Métro and music composed around its iconic three-note chime, the piece transforms the movement of the city into a space for ambient listening. Brian Eno’s Music for Airports serves as a beacon for the work, exploring how transit hubs can become spaces for listening rather than simply passing through. Joshua Wolk’s trainjazz similarly inspired my use of transit data as a means of musical expression. Created as the Métro approaches its 60th anniversary, CORRESPONDANCE invites you to pause within the movement of Montréal.

How It Works

CORRESPONDANCE translates STM service activity into a continuously evolving soundscape. Each Métro line controls a musical layer derived from the system’s three-note chime, while bus activity shapes additional texture and field-recorded ambience. Live and scheduled transit data continuously reshape the mix, allowing Montréal’s transit network to influence how the composition unfolds. Change the day of the week and time to hear how the STM system’s activity changes throughout the week.
